Want to learn how to combine LASERS and glass? Grab a ticket for our upcoming collaboration with UrbanGlass!

In this one day workshop, students will get to design a simple object within a 7″ x 7″ square, laser cut that object in wood and then cast it in glass. It’s a full-day event, from 10am-7pm on December 12.

We’ve got other classes coming up, too, including a vector display class and our usual laser certification class. Check ’em out on our Eventbrite!

Curious about Arduinos? Not sure where to start? Come to our introductory Arduino class on November 15th! Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

2015-04-19-IMG_4701

We’ll cover the basics of using an Arduino for both input and output, using a light sensor, LEDs, a buzzer, and more! We’ll also talk about breadboarding and the basics of Arduino programming. No previous electronics experience necessary. Our Arduino classes often sell out, so get your tickets!

Every Monday at NYC Resistor is Laser Night, but now every other Monday is also Knit Night! That means tonight, zomg. Come, bring your knitting projects, and hang out. We’ll be here from 7pm til 10pm, or whenever we decide to go home.

Do you wanna build a robot? (cue Frozen music)

No, but seriously, how about an introductory Arduino class where you’ll learn to build a robot?

ezgif-4196068493

This class is part of our introductory Arduino, in which you’ll learn to use the Arduino family micro-controllers to interact with the physical world! You don’t need any previous experience with hardware, electrical engineering, or circuitry. In this class, we’ll be covering an introduction to the Adafruit Trinket, a tiny Arduino-IDE programmable board, servo motors, and using sensors for obstacle avoidance. You’ll also go home with your own programmable autonomous robot rover!

Tickets on sale now. Class is Sunday August 23rd.

Every Monday night is Laser Night at Resistor. But now, every other Monday is also Knit Knight!

Bring your projects, and come hang out with us. We’ll be knitting from 7:30pm, same as Laser Night.

For future Knit Knights, check the calendar.

Last week at our meeting, NYC Resistor voted to adopt a code of conduct. Woo!

We ask that if you’re visiting our space, you adhere to the code of conduct below. You can also find it on our Participate page. If you have any questions, speak to a member or email us at [email protected].

The NYC Resistor Code of Conduct

Welcome to NYC Resistor. We are here to learn, share, and make. We want everyone to feel comfortable asking questions, trying new things, and making mistakes. We ask that your conduct be guided by the desire to help us create an inclusive, encouraging, and diverse environment free of intimidation and harassment. We are an eighteen and over facility.

Comments, actions, or visual displays which demean, harass, or insult others are not permitted. This includes those which target a person’s race, creed, ethnicity, age, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical appearance, or ability.

NYC Resistor reserves the right to summarily eject you if you recklessly endanger others, act in violation of the code outlined above, or otherwise behave poorly.

If someone is abusive or causes you to feel uncomfortable, speak to a member or email us at [email protected]

This code of conduct is neither exhaustive, nor complete. It serves to distill our common understanding of a safe, collaborative space.

We’ve added a whole bunch of Arduino classes to the calendar! The next one will be Intro to Arduino: Sensors and Input/Output, on Sunday July 19th. (Tickets here!)

All of these classes are designed to be introductory-level, so while we’ll assume some basic knowledge of programming (some familiarity with variables, loops, and arrays), no prior experience with hardware, electronics, or circuitry is assumed.

Over the next few months, here’s what we’re teaching:

All of these classes will cover a basic introduction to Arduino, as well as a more specific topic — how to control LEDs, for instance, or how to communicate over WiFi.

(Some of the tickets aren’t on sale yet, as we’re still working on finalizing class content.)

And then on December 6th, we’ll have an Arduino Hack Day, where you can take what you’ve learned and apply it to your own projects, with TAs on hand to help you make your projects a reality.

Tickets to the next class (next Sunday!) are on sale now.

Been waiting for an intro to Arduino class? Join us for a NSFW edition on May 23rd! Tickets here. We’re partnering with Orgasmatronics Inc. to run a class — check out their IndieGoGo campaign. The workshop will be a no-experience-needed, no-soldering-needed introduction to using Arduino to control vibrators and other sex toys.

As always, Eventbrite has our full class listing.

Ignoring the Half-Tau Day heretics out there, we laser-etched some pies for Pi Day. This is a cranberry-orange meringue pie. Turns out the meringue etches beautifully! If you look closely at the pie you’ll notice that there are digits of pi forming the outline… 😉

(More photos on my blog. )

Settings for raw meringue on our laser are apparently 100 power and 100 speed. (We did bake it a bit after this, no worries.) Making laser noms is fun!

Lasers can make tasty treats. I spent some time last night with my friend Brenda Hiller (pictured here) experimenting with using the laser to caramelize colored sugar onto some chocolate tiles. Place a piece of chocolate into the laser (with something food-safe under it, of course), pour on some sugar, and then etch away. We were experimenting with what kinds of shapes we’d be able to etch.

The end result? The caramelized sugar sticks to the chocolate tiles, and it is super tasty. Full writeup and a few more photos on my blog.
