Learn to Use a Laser Cutter to Cut and Etch Your Own Designs

Tickets on EventBrite

Harness the power of an Epilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, you will learn:

  • How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Laser cutter safety including materials testing.
  • Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.

At the end of class, you will go home with:

  • One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)
  • Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.

Please bring the following to class:

A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.

A USB jump drive

The following items are optional if you’d like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted – but we’ll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!

  • An SVG vector file of a simple shape you’d like to cut for your first cut.
  • A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you’d like to cut. If you can’t bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.

Please be on time for the start of class! If you’re late you will miss your slot.

COVID-19 Safety Policies are strictly enforced – failure to follow these rules will result in denial of entry. You must:

  • Show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster
  • Wear a mask at all times

This class will be taught by NYC Resistor member Woody. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Learn to use the command line to control computers from desktops to microcomputers to the cloud in this no-experience-necessary intro class!

Tickets available on EventBrite

Friendly Intro to the Command Line for Beginners

Would you like to learn how to control a wide variety of computers, from your own laptop to tiny computers like the Raspberry Pi to huge deployments in the cloud? Are you interested in analyzing large volumes of text data, like corpus analysis in the digital humanities, or automating computing pipelines in the natural and social sciences, all with a tool that costs nothing and you probably already have? The command line is an indispensable tool for everyone who wants to learn how to do creative, powerful computing, from digital artists to citizen scientists to at-home hardware hackers.

This class is intended for people with no command line experience – we will start from the very beginning, and take a guided, hands on tour of the basics of command line usage. You’ll go home understanding when the command line is the right tool for the job, how it works, an a bit of experience piloting it through basic tasks.

This class will be taught by Resistor member Bill!

Cats who teach soldering, instant parties, & machine-sewable LEDs? A pay-what-you-wish project talk from creative technologist Steph Piper.

Bringing the Magic of Electronics to the Joy of Crafting (online)

Mixing electronics with art is an exciting area with a lot of potential. If done well, it can make even simple projects look like magic to inspire others. Hear about three example projects in this space, including making multicolour circuit boards, building the Party Button, a 2m tall interactive art piece and GlowStitch LEDs, a new product for machine sewing LEDs for wearable tech projects. Get an idea of the workflow involved in creating your own art circuit boards with open software in KiCAD and Inkscape. This talk will break down what went into each project, where things went wrong and where things went above and beyond. There will also be a sneak peek into the upcoming crowdfunding campaign for GlowStitch LEDs: The most versatile way to add lights to crafting projects.

Foam Clay: October Make-Along!

Return of the Make-Along! These are not your typical craft classes. Make-Alongs are self-guided craft workshops where participants learn new skills, explore new materials, and make great things!

October’s Topic: Foam Clay

Tickets available on EventBrite

Try foam clay in a casual community workshop environment. Foam clay sculpts or molds like clay, but dries into a flexible foam. Its flexible, light, and non toxic properties make it a popular material in the cosplay and props communities, as well as for jewelry or sculpture. Want to futher refine your piece? The dried foam clay can be cut with scissors and sanded (by hand or rotary tool) just like EVA foam. It can also be painted or coated to make it more colorful and durable. No experience needed! Class includes all supplies needed. Trade ideas and techniques with other attendees. Great opportunity to start a costume piece for Halloween or any other occasion.

Are you a beginner? We’ll provide materials including foam clay, thin EVA foam sheets, paints, adhesives and coatings.

Are you a master? Show off your skills and inspire others! Bring a project, use our materials, and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.

This class will be lead by NYC Resistor members, Ben and Ben.

Science Fiction wields powerful influence over real-world scientific/technological research, socio-political development, and the way we imagine, design, build and live in our cities. While future fictions can open our imagination about future possibilities, too often they actually limit our understanding of most prescient issues, and reduce our sense of agency. In this talk, Monika Bielskyte will explore new horizons of inclusive, contextual & participatory storyworld designs she’s been working towards with @protopiafutures collaborative research & creation platform, as an antidote to neocolonial, harmful future stereotypes, and its binary visions of Dystopia vs Utopia.

As a futures researcher, Monika Bielskyte has been on a decade-long nomadic journey engaging with future emergence in 90+ countries. As a futurist, Monika consults at the future intersection of technology, culture & politics. As a world designer, she explores the bleeding edges of Science Fiction universes, having been commissioned by major film productions and studios.

Monika is currently developing @protopiafutures, a platform for research & creative collaborations challenging & offering alternatives to dystopian/utopian stereotypes. Protopia prototypes visions of radically hopeful & inclusive futures shaped by the urgent need for expanded futures literacy, & to combat the rise of disinformation in the coming age of the increasingly immersive media.

Join us for a fun and fascinating discussion to open a window into a world that many people know little about. Its impact is significant and growing, affecting for many of us as consumers and employees at companies that work with sensitive data.

Leroy Terrelonge is our guest for this talk. He is an expert on Cyber Risk Insurance and is currently a Vice President and Senior Analyst in the Cyber Risk Group at Moody’s Investors Service. He and his team do work that’s frequently referenced in the media, including this report from the Wall Street Journal: “Boards, Security Chiefs Face Challenges Over New Cyber Rules”

Other than being a good human, Leroy is exceptional in a number of ways. He speaks English, Russian, Persian (Farsi, Tajik, Dari), Spanish, French, Arabic, Kazakh, and Jamaican Patois and has a significant amount of experience working in the Intelligence Community, conducting research and developing intelligence about a broad range of topics, including cyber crime, national security, and political risk.

Gene Radin will lead this session and use his extensive product management experience and specific focus on privacy and security matters in technology to keep things interesting and help to make sure that we all learn something useful.

Please join us if…

  • You’re a curious person who wants to hear about an interesting topic.
  • You’re working at a company that doesn’t have a cyber insurance policy and might want or need one
  • You’re starting a business and want to set it up for safety, whether or not you’ll need a policy in the future
  • You’re part of a company that doesn’t have a well developed security or privacy program and have questions about what actions you can take to reduce risk for yourself and other employees, the business, and consumers.

Bring your questions!

There are two ways to attend this event —people who want to join us in person (proof of full vaccination with K/N95 masks must be worn at all times and are available for anyone who needs one), but you can also participate via an online feed that you can access using Zoom

Anyone attending NYC Resistor events is required to follow our code of conduct. Ticket purchases help us to serve our community and keep the doors open at our hacker space in Brooklyn. Learn more about both: https://www.nycresistor.com/participate/
