Good metrics are hard to find. Even harder – making metrics that people use to make decisions. ?Sure, we’ve heard about it before – but how do we go about it to make better decisions that don’t:
The biggest problem with most numbers is two fold – one they seem abstract to people leveraging them, even if they are researched, and two they simply don’t know what to do with them. Making better decisions with metrics is a talk that helps someone transform the numbers they have into something useable for the people who need them.

Learn how to cut glass bottles! No experience necessary. In this make-a-long, we will learn how to score glass and then heat and cool the glass to break it! We will have a limited number of empty bottles at the workshop, but you are encouraged to bring your own, too! Circular wine and liquor bottles work best, but we’ve also had some success with square and odd shaped bottles!
You can use the cut bottles for an array of crafts and hobbies! Planters, candles, lamps, drinking glasses, and more!
This class will be taught be NYC Resistor member Ben K. In a past life, Ben cut wine bottles and turned them into candles professionally.

Want to get started with physical computing?
Learn to program with Arduino and interact with the physical world! In this class, we’ll cover an introduction to Arduino and learn how to manipulate outputs based on sensor inputs. No prior programming or electronics knowledge is required. This is the in-person version of this class– you may also be interested in the online version.

At this in-person class, you will receive a basic electronics starter kit, which contains a starter pack of electronics components and sensors, including a breadboard, wires, light sensor, temperature sensor, LEDs, switches, buzzer and more. You will also receive an Adafruit Metro (Arduino UNO equivalent).

Who should take this class?
Basic computer knowledge is assumed, and we’ll refresh a few concepts from high school physics and math. No previous experience with coding or circuits is required. Class size is extremely limited to allow physical distancing and provide the most opportunities for conversation and individual troubleshooting.

It takes a meteor strike for Resistor to cancel a Thursday Craft Night – or a call from our pals at ITP to host their thesis show! Craft Night is cancelled 4/20, but you’re invited to join us at Resistor from 6-9 PM that night for an art show from some tremendous creators, hosted at NYCR. This event is free, 21+ and with masks required for all attendees.
The Thursday 4/20 Craft Night is the only exception to our regular schedule; all other Monday and Thursday Craft Nights will proceed in perpetuity – see you there!

Come try Free Motion Embroidery in this exploratory workshop!
Free motion embroidery, also known as free hand sewing, free machine embroidery and free machine stitching, is a technique in which you use the sewing machine needle as a ‘pen’ and move the fabric around in any direction under the needle.
During this 3 hour session, beyond sewn images you will be introduced to the various uses for Free Motion Embroidery from mending holes, to crafting sculptures out of thread.
The workshop will start with an overview with samples demonstrating various uses of free motion embroidery. Next we will configure the machine then get into mending a hole in fabric (darning). Once we have a handle on working with fabrics, we will learn how to sew on water soluble material to create sculpture.
All materials and tools will be provided for use during the workshop. You will also receive a resource guide for exploring this technique further on your own.
This workshop is for those with at least a beginners level experience with machine sewing. You must know how to thread a standard domestic sewing machine and sew a straight stitch.
The instructor:
Daniel Ryan Johnston – Brooklyn based queer textile artist, researcher, and creative technologist. I have been creating for the body since 2007. Mixing my love of creepy puppets, wearables and machine embroidery sculpture, my work explores personal experiences with managing mental health, body image and psoriatic arthritis. I am a graduate of Columbia College Chicago (BA), the Fashion Institute of Technology (AAS) and the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU (MPS).

Surface mount components! They’re hip, they’re tiny, and you’ve probably swallowed a couple accidentally by now. If you’re still using those clunky, chunky through-hole components that you found in your grandparents’ butter cookie tin, well, it’s time to get with the times and learn how to solder the teeny-weeny components of the future!
During this class we’ll go over not one, not two, but three different soldering techniques for surface mount components. We’ll try our hand at traditional hand-soldering, move on to the fast-paced world of drag soldering, and finally learn how to apply solder paste and do SMT reflow in an upcycled toaster oven we found on the curb– just like the pros! You’ll leave with a beautiful, colorful semicircular LED board that you’ve built yourself. It can be used as a fun colorful display, a volt meter, a VU meter, or whatever else you can think of!
Due to demand, we’ll be hosting not one but two classes this upcoming April 8th. The first will run from 11am-1:30pm, and the second will start at 2pm and run until 4:30pm. Your choice! Learn new skills without disrupting your brunch plans!
No prior soldering experience is required for this class. You can do it!
Your Instructor: Adam Mayer is a longtime NYCR member who burnt his finger on a soldering iron when he was ten and has never forgiven it. He has done questionable things with PCBs and hot plates.

Curious about sewing? This introductory class covers all the essentials you’ll need to start making your own projects. Bring at least 1 t-shirt, and we’ll make it into a backpack. If you bring a second t-shirt (the larger the better! 2xl is ideal!) and we’ll turn it into a laptop case – if you don’t have a second, larger, t-shirt, we’ll find some fabric scraps in the space for you to work on.

Come celebrate National Robotics Week by learning how to make your very first robot. This workshop is intended for people with little-to-no prior experience. Get a crash course in fundamentals of robotics while learning how to build a fun skitter robot from the book Homemade Robots.
On Scrubot:
Do not be fooled. Scrub Bot was not the simple sort of bot that materializes overnight when Randy zip tied a bunch of scrub brushes together. No! There was an ineffable cosmic plan that led up to this bot’s creation, going back well beyond the day when man, through genetic mutation, first evolved the ability to manufacture zip ties and scrub brushes. This bot is a bona fide cosmic child.
The instructor:
Randy Sarafan is the author of the books “Homemade Robots” and “62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer.” He has worked for Instructables.com for well over a decade and has posted hundreds of tutorials online in a wide range of subjects.
