Thanks to Justin’s hard work we have an internet party line link to two teletypes at NYCResistor.

Here’s some video of us watching the live feed of teletype traffic coming in from the internets.

An NYCR Minute from Matt Joyce on Vimeo.

Life at a hacklab is pretty crazy, and from time to time you need to poke your head up and smell the roses so to speak.  So here is one minute of NYCResistor.  Taken Sunday night just before 11pm.  After a hard day of hacking away.

Yeah, life in a hackerspace is pretty much candycanes and unicorns.

Canuck Hackers Hacking Aboot

You may remember Canadia as the red terror of the north. Whose imperialistic aspirations once lead them to invade the United States without any evidence or accusation of wrong doing. But today, I’m going to write not about the unbridled threat to our freedoms that these loyalists bring to the table… but about the awesome hack space that’s starting to really get rolling in Toronto. hacklab.to is housed in the kensington area of toronto above a bar. Seth Hardy and Leigh Honeywell have been working tirelessly for months to see this place get off the ground and from the looks of it they are very nearly close to success. I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing more from these guys. Especially if they start stock piling on siege weapons and molson ice for an impending invasion of the colonies.

Read more about them at their site: http://hacklab.to/

Make:NYC was once again hosted at NYC Resistor. This event is a free event open to all… with one requirement. People who show up are expected to get their hands dirty and make things. At the last meeting we had a windmill energy challenge. 4 teams created windmills in an attempt to generate the most energy. We had some exceptional results. You can find out more about Make:NYC at www.makenyc.org.

5 minutes is time enough for a blog image.

This week NYC Resistor will be hosting Make:NYC for a third time. If you enjoy the DIY community and want to be a part of it, or already are, you are welcome to attend. The event is free, and open to all.

Make:NYC is a group I help run, and Resistor has been kind of enough to lend us space to do cool stuff at cost to myself and several other organizing individuals. We do ask that people participating in events at Make:NYC please donate whatever they can afford to, or deem to be reasonable. We don’t make money off these events, and while we are glad to take a loss just to see you guys enjoy them… It is always nice to still have enough cash afterwards to eat dinner.

That being said, this weeks event will be a pinwheel power generator challenge. We had a lot of fun with our blimp team face off and we think it’s time for another challenge event. All are welcome, regardless of skill level.

Additionally, if you have a project that you think is awesome, please bring it. We love when people show off the things they’ve made and we’re pretty sure most people showing up will be more than happy to see what you’ve created. So show up Thursday at 6:30 pm and have some fun. Meet some people. Become part of a growing DIY community. Make things.

the true secret of nimh

the true secret of nimh

It would appear that my soldering iron has been purloined by nefarious minds indeed. I’ve been instructed to post an image depicting the daring liberation of a soldering iron as carried out by rats of a certain caliber of awesome. Rather than invest time in actual photoshop goodness I’ve instead gimped the rats of nimh. Hopefully those who have my iron will return it safely.

Jack Bauer apparel for the modern Cyber Terrorist.

Jack Bauer apparel for the modern Cyber Terrorist.

Don’t get caught wearing this in Boston, or on line for your next flight. But the latest in hacker apparel makes sinister use of the ageless dark art of LED matrices. Anyways I am bringing my jacket to defcon to announce to the world, that the gauntlet has been thrown down… who will be first to legitimately drop a Pants Status: Pwned.

In terms of Technical Details, the Jacket uses a MAX 6952 LED array driver and is being written to via SPI.. and a boarduino.

Exploitable Crypto Memory

Flylogic engineering blog provides in depth analysis of common Integrated Circuits and occasionally points out serious flaws in their design. Currently the site isn’t very large, but it is jam packed with truly awesome visuals of some of our favorite ICs. If anything, you’ll find yourself in absolute awe of 2 dollar components that we use daily without ever really giving consideration to the complexity of.

Personally this has to be one of my top ten favorite all time websites. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

So here’s a quick preview of the LED Array Jacket. I’m pretty excited it’s managed to light. Currently I am redesigning the driver circuit and boarduino to work with non-solid core wiring and to be more elegant and clean. But I thought this might wet your appetites.
