Glass Bottle Cutting: January Make-Along

Learn how to cut glass bottles! No experience necessary. In this make-a-long, we will learn how to score glass and then heat and cool the glass to break it! We will have a limited number of empty bottles at the workshop, but you are encouraged to bring your own, too! Circular wine and liquor bottles work best, but we’ve also had some success with square and odd shaped bottles!

You can use the cut bottles for an array of crafts and hobbies! Planters, candles, lamps, drinking glasses, and more!

This class will be taught be NYC Resistor member Ben K. In a past life, Ben cut wine bottles and turned them into candles professionally.

Pixels as Data: Touch Designer for Visual Artists

No more need for numbers! This workshop will cover how we can work with TouchDesigner (a live rendering visual software) to create complex 3D visuals that are light(er) on your GPU through instanced geometry. We’ll learn how to turn pixel information into an interactive visual environment that responds to camera or video inputs or runs autonomously, and is great for immersive installations and concert visuals.

You are not expected to have any experience with TouchDesigner or 3D renders prior to this workshop (although it won’t hurt!) – we’ll graze through some beginner UI & how to at the top, but it’ll be quick so we have more time with the fun stuff! The class is designed with visual thinkers and artists in mind, and aims to make the software accessible to everyone.

You will need a laptop with TouchDesigner downloaded and ready to run. The non-commercial version is free and available here: https://derivative.ca/download . Please open the software before coming to ensure your laptop is able to run it without any strain.

This class will be taught by Evangeline Brooks (she/her). Brooks is a Toronto-based post-digital artist focused on artist community work. Her practice is informed by overlapping identities and seeks solace and pleasure, rather than resistance, in digital images cohabitating in our physical world. She works with TouchDesigner in creating digital visualizations for live performances, namely for ponyHAUS, a grassroots AV showcase, and Frequencies, a Toronto electronic music series, where she is the founder/co-host and in-house visual artist, respectively. Brooks holds a BFA from TMU’s School of Image Arts and has shown with TIFFxInstagram, Open Doors Toronto, and the Toronto Images Festival.

What are the worlds we are creating through play? Play gives us permission to explore our collective imagination in experimental ways. What are the narratives in our games? How does play and the way we design it help generate the future? How are we creating rule systems in relationship to our bodies, traumas, histories, and cultures? Exploring the ways that interactive narrative and technology entangle us within tapestry of our world, this talk asks how we can rethink our creative work and lives to generate a world worth living in.

Phoenix Perry creates embodied games and installations. Her work brings people together to explore their impact on each other and the environment. As an advocate for women in game development, she founded Code Liberation Foundation. Presently, she leads an MSc in Creative Computing at UAL. Since 1996, she has exhibited in a range of cultural venues and game events including Somerset House, Wellcome Collection, Lincoln Center, GDC, A Maze, and Indiecade. She owned Devotion Gallery in Brooklyn, NY from 2009 – 2014. Devotion generated dialogue between art, technology, and scientific research.

Intro to Soldering Workshop: Make an LED Tile

Soldering is one of the most important skills you’ll need for working with electronics. Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and desoldering techniques. We’ll be soldering up some Game of Life kits – LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who’s curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Please be ready to start at 1pm! We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you’re interested, you may want to sign up early.

Cats who teach soldering, instant parties, & machine-sewable LEDs? A pay-what-you-wish project talk from creative technologist Steph Piper.

Bringing the Magic of Electronics to the Joy of Crafting (online)

Mixing electronics with art is an exciting area with a lot of potential. If done well, it can make even simple projects look like magic to inspire others. Hear about three example projects in this space, including making multicolour circuit boards, building the Party Button, a 2m tall interactive art piece and GlowStitch LEDs, a new product for machine sewing LEDs for wearable tech projects. Get an idea of the workflow involved in creating your own art circuit boards with open software in KiCAD and Inkscape. This talk will break down what went into each project, where things went wrong and where things went above and beyond. There will also be a sneak peek into the upcoming crowdfunding campaign for GlowStitch LEDs: The most versatile way to add lights to crafting projects.

Steph Piper is a creative technologist and maker. She is the Community Engagement Coordinator at USQ, looking after the library Makerspace. She also creates electronics kits for young girls that are now sold globally through US and UK stockists. Foam Clay: October Make-Along!

Return of the Make-Along! These are not your typical craft classes. Make-Alongs are self-guided craft workshops where participants learn new skills, explore new materials, and make great things!

October’s Topic: Foam Clay

Try foam clay in a casual community workshop environment. Foam clay sculpts or molds like clay, but dries into a flexible foam. Its flexible, light, and non toxic properties make it a popular material in the cosplay and props communities, as well as for jewelry or sculpture. Want to futher refine your piece? The dried foam clay can be cut with scissors and sanded (by hand or rotary tool) just like EVA foam. It can also be painted or coated to make it more colorful and durable. No experience needed! Class includes all supplies needed. Trade ideas and techniques with other attendees. Great opportunity to start a costume piece for Halloween or any other occasion.

Are you a beginner? We’ll provide materials including foam clay, thin EVA foam sheets, paints, adhesives and coatings.

Are you a master? Show off your skills and inspire others! Bring a project, use our materials, and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.

Halloween and Special Effects Make-Up Class

Spooky season is almost upon us so this is the perfect time to learn some skills to impress this Halloween. In this class you will learn how to make bruises, cuts and wounds. You will learn about different products and experiment on yourself and/or your co-classmates. All materials will be included with the ticket.

This class will be lead by NYC Resistor member, Manon Raman. Manon is an artist who was born in Belgium but has been living in New York for the past year. She is a full time painter now but before she used her skills on canvasses she was a make-up artist for series and movies in her home country.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, RSVP AND PROOF OF COVID VACCINATION ARE ALL FIRMLY REQUIRED. All attendees must present photo ID and one of the following:

CDC card showing you completed your final vaccine dose at least two weeks ago.

Science Fiction wields powerful influence over real-world scientific/technological research, socio-political development, and the way we imagine, design, build and live in our cities. While future fictions can open our imagination about future possibilities, too often they actually limit our understanding of most prescient issues, and reduce our sense of agency. In this talk, Monika Bielskyte will explore new horizons of inclusive, contextual & participatory storyworld designs she’s been working towards with @protopiafutures collaborative research & creation platform, as an antidote to neocolonial, harmful future stereotypes, and its binary visions of Dystopia vs Utopia.

As a futures researcher, Monika Bielskyte has been on a decade-long nomadic journey engaging with future emergence in 90+ countries. As a futurist, Monika consults at the future intersection of technology, culture & politics. As a world designer, she explores the bleeding edges of Science Fiction universes, having been commissioned by major film productions and studios.

Monika is currently developing @protopiafutures, a platform for research & creative collaborations challenging & offering alternatives to dystopian/utopian stereotypes. Protopia prototypes visions of radically hopeful & inclusive futures shaped by the urgent need for expanded futures literacy, & to combat the rise of disinformation in the coming age of the increasingly immersive media.

NYC Resistor at RC3 – Avatar Fashion Show is taking place at NYC Resistor on Wed, Dec 30. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Launching our virtual NYC Resistor Clubhouse and Hackerspace connector in conjunction with this year’s Chaos Computing Congress (CCC).

The documentation here contains a github link where you can get the base model. Updates not in the document: You should use Blender 2.91 and the latest Hubs exporter.

For examples of how to rig your own model, watch this handy tutorial.

Additional things to know:

The lattice component morphs the model into skirt formation (will happen when the modifiers are applied on export). If you want a non-skirt robot model just delete the lattice modifier.
Make sure your animations are not in edit mode when you go to export. Go the the animation tab in Blender and make sure the bars in the key frame area are not green. If they are, click into that area and hit tab. If the bars turn orange, you’re good to go. – Do not try to apply modifiers before exporting, instead check the Apply Modifiers box in the export settings when you export.
Make sure your Hubs components are in the right place: animation components (like idle_eyes) go on the avatar root, and morph keys (aka shape keys, used for, say, animating the mouth when talking) go on the mesh.

We are super excited to be launching our virtual NYCResistor space – NYC Resistor Clubhouse and Hackerspace connector – in conjunction with Chaos Computing Congress 2020 (CCC) this year known as RC3 – Remote Computing Experience. You can join in 2D on your desktop and mobile browser, or you can join in VR — all major headsets are supported. For best browser experience we recommend Firefox or Brave. (On chrome you will experience a very slow frame rate). For VR, just go to the link in your browser and follow the instructions.

There are no need to get tickets, but we’ve created Eventbrite pages for each event so if you want a calendar link, sign up for a free ticket and it will sort out the timezones for you.

Show off your best avatar at our avatar fashion show!! There are many ways to play, model your own avatar, rig one or reskin an existing avatar with your own textures. Our only restriction is that you keep polygon count below 5,000 and textures no larger than 1024×1024.
